Colorado Springs, CO (June 1, 2019) - Colorado Rush and Logroñes Denver SC met once again, this time for the Colorado Super League title. Weidner Field, home of the USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks, hosted the game as part of CSA Night at Switchbacks.
Both teams played each other in Week 2 of regular season, that game was won by Logroñes 3-1 after going down 1-0. This time around, Colorado Rush was hoping to win the game that mattered the most.
The Rush side coached by Joe Webb got off to an early start. The team maintained possession of the ball in the early stages of the game, stringing along passes with center midfielders Eduardo Reza and Fabricio Barankowski. At the 4 minute-mark, midfielder Brandon Sloan curled a beautiful ball from the left side finding Andrew White who finished the play by putting the ball in the back of the net. It was a dream start for Colorado Rush.
Logroñes looked slow and unorganized as a team for the first 15 minutes, having a hard time with their first touch and finding their teammates with a simple pass. Colorado Rush continued to maintain possession of the ball and created two good chances with midfielder Bailey Rouse and striker Ben Gaido.
At the 32nd minute, Logroñes settled down and began to be a bit more aggressive going forward. Goalscorer Jose Montalvo created an opportunity getting behind the centerbacks, but Rush goalkeeper Cooper Erickson did a good job coming out and sweeping the threat.
Three minutes later, Julio Rodriguez recovered a ball off a Colorado Rush throw in and clipped a pass for Steven Robellada who split the center backs and finished on a one-time volley to even out the score.
After both teams had time to regroup during halftime, Colorado Rush's Jakob Ervin intercepted a pass from center back Dante Rafaela at the one-minute mark and created a 2v1 situation. He dribbled, closed down on the opponents goal, and passed the ball to his teammate Davonte Jones who couldn't finish inside the eighteen-yard box.
The game continued to present chances for both teams. At the 28th minute in the second-half, Eduardo Reza played a through ball to Davonte Jones inside the 18, he then sets it up for Jakob Ervin who strikes it and scores with about 15 minutes to go. Rush was up once again.
That was going to be last time Rush would have the lead, as they gave up the equalizer after a foul in the box during stoppage time.
Eulises Pavon would send this game to extra-time, while Julio Rodriguez scored the game winning goal in the third minute of the second-half in extra-time. That goal was scored from the penalty spot as well, as center referee Chris Greer called a doubtful foul in the box.
Logroñes Denver SC finished their perfect season winning the inaugural Colorado Super League - Spring 2019 Final.
